Post Exhibition: Degas

Last Sunday was the last day for the special exhibition for Edges Degas. I was here for three times, since last July, with someone that I still feel I cannot get over from time to time. It is weird to look at photos from that time. I don't even know whether I am still in pain. Maybe yes, maybe not, but what I know is that losing him was so hard that I pushed myself to change, to a better person, a happier person. It is such a weird thing that how powerful affection is.
Anyway, that is only a moment of nostalgia. Too much off topic.

Degas: On the Opera Stage

Degas is famous for painting actresses, dancers, and singers on the opera house stages. Some of them were on exhibition.
So, I am going to start with my favorite
Degas' painting on exhibition of dancers
I cannot image all the elegant movements of dancers can be exhibit on a canvas.

Above is the whole group of dancer performing. I lve this one. Degas presented the depth well.

Above is his famous "the Yellow Dancer". I really love it, but I like the other 2 better.

This is really small comparing to the 3 paintings above it. It is a little dancer, probably 6 or 7 years old. I adore the pink dress.

"The star" depicts a star dancer thanking to her audiance. It is famous, just I don't like it.
And some other paintings, I wonder whether they are oil sketches or some other types of practice.

Degas: On the track

Degas also has studies horse race, as one of his wealthy friend invited him to stay at his country residence for some time.
This is a super popular sport among the French upper class. Here is Manet's depiction of this sport.
Manet's painting of racing
Racing is dangerous. Degas depicted a scene that a gentleman fell from his horse, possibly mortally injured. Racing by Degas
And some of his practice or observations.

Degas' other paintings in Art Institute of Chicago Museum

Besides paintings that appear in the Degas' opera scenes, there are some other paintings by Edgar Degas. To start with, a portrait of Degas's family: his uncle and his nephew.
